Today I was pleasantly surprised to see our service lane transformed. What was once a very nice and steady service drive lane, here at your local Southern Maryland Ford Dealer, was now an active and exciting place! It was great to see both service employees and customers actively engaged in their vehicle health!
Chris conducting a Wheel Alignment
Today was the debut of the brand new wheel alignment check machine. Here is some trivia for you: Did you know that approximately 60% of vehicles are out of alignment? After hearing that percentage many customers (me included) were definitely taking advantage of this complementary service. I was asked by Hunter Engineering’s manufacturer representative if I would like a complementary vehicle inspection that only took 3 minutes! I thought awesome! Convenient and FREE? What more could I ask for? I did have some questions though. It just seemed too good to be true. Questions like: how were they able to inspect my vehicle in such a short amount of time? How did the computer work? How could it be free?
Well, Hunter Engineering Company‘s Representative was very excited about the freshly installed alignment check machine and was more than happy to explain how it worked. He also encouraged me to learn how the process worked. He first gave me a step by step demonstration on the inspection process and before I knew it; I was able to inspect the vehicle myself!
The Hunter Quick Check Inspection Process is more than just an alignment quick check system; it allows the operator to optimally test key maintenance items like batteries and tires.
Did you know that over 10% of vehicles have battery related issues? Like many of us, the battery is an afterthought but it’s so easy to test. So, the first thing we did was test battery. During the test we made sure that it was within OEM (Original equipment) specifications. Luckily mine was Green for Good; not Red for Bad!
Inspector Chris checking the Battery
Also, did you know that over 20% of vehicles have one or more tires in need of replacement? That’s right, so that’s why we checked for tire tread depth and tire pressure. What was most cool about this was that they let me check the tire tread depth and pressure on my own – it was so easy! I got to use this super cool Tread-Depth tool that allowed you one or three-point tire readings.
Tire Tread Depth Tool
Finally, we determined whether the vehicle needed a wheel alignment. Everything was in the green which was good.
All of this information was taken by a photo capture that then forwarded to the control console. Which then after calculating was able to create a special customized printout that clearly outlined all my test results!
This process was super cool and quick. Thank you to Waldorf Ford’s Service Department! The FREE Wheel alignment Quick Inspection definitely gave me piece of mind!

Waldorf Ford Makes Driveway Car-Washing Easy and Fun with Tips and Video
Waldorf, Maryland, 2013 – Saving a few dollars, getting a little exercise in the sun or prepping your classic for a summer cruise are just a few reasons to clean your vehicle by hand.
Besides, a freshly-washed and cleaned car just looks better, right?
Waldorf Ford has some tips for the next time you’re in the mood to grab a hose and a bucket to make the star of your driveway look its best.
Visit http://www.TheFordStory.com to watch “Ford Makes Car-Washing Easy,” a short and entertaining video featuring Gerry Bonanni, senior engineer, Paint and Body Repair and the Ford GT Mustang.
Cleaning your car’s exterior:
• Be well-soaked: Make sure the car is fully rinsed off first and kept wet during the wash. You want to float the dirt off the surface
• Use the right soap: Ford recommends soap specifically formulated for cars. “Even a mild dishwashing liquid can strip wax protection and possibly cause waterspotting concerns,” said Gerry Bonanni, senior engineer, Paint and Body Repair
• Grab your mitt: Ford recommends a sponge or wool mitt. Keep the sponge or mitt wet and sudsy to help float the dirt away instead of rubbing or scratching the surface
• Start at the top: Wash the top, then the sides and save the bottom for last, which is where the most grit typically accumulates
• Dry it off: Use a water blade and a soft towel to fully dry the vehicle
• Wax on: Ford recommends waxing your car to help keep the surface protected
• Wiper blades: Use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
Each Ford vehicle undergoes a five-layer paint process designed to enhance long-term durability. The procedure starts with a pretreatment that protects against corrosion and ends with a clearcoat that aids in reducing chips and scratches.
Cleaning your car’s interior:
• Instrument panel: Wipe the instrument panel, interior trim areas and cluster lens with a clean, damp white cotton cloth, then use a clean and dry white cotton cloth to dry those areas. Household or glass cleaners are not recommended
• Vacuum: For fabric, carpets, cloth seats and safety belts, use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and loose dirt
• Use the right cleaners: Ford recommends using auto-specific carpet and upholstery cleaner for light stains. If grease or tar is present, Ford recommends spot-cleaning the area first with an auto-specific spot-and-stain remover
• For leather seats: For routine cleaning, wipe the surface with a soft, damp cloth. For more thorough cleaning, wipe the surface with a mild soap-and-water solution. Dry the area with a soft cloth. Leather cleaning products designed for automotive interiors also are available
Summer-specific issues
Ford recommends never washing a vehicle that is hot to the touch or during exposure to strong, direct sunlight. In addition to warm weather, summer also presents other challenges when it comes to keeping your car looking nice. When you’re hit with the following, try to clean off quickly and follow these tips:
• Bird droppings, bugs, suntan lotion, insect repellent: Wash off with car wash soap and water as soon as possible
• Tree sap and tar: Use a good quality bug and tar remover and wax afterward
• Bothered by bugs? Going on a long trip and don’t want to face a windshield and/or bumper full of dead insects by the time you arrive? Wipe down your windshield with a tumble dryer sheet; bugs won’t stick to the glass as easily. Also, give your bumpers the once-over with cooking spray
• Don’t scratch it; smear it: Can’t get that sticker from the amusement park or beach parking lot off your window? Saturate it with cooking oil before you start scrubbing
Here are a couple of tips aimed at those who display their vehicles at car shows.
To clean aluminum wheels and wheel covers:
• Use wheel and tire cleaner. Heavy dirt and brake dust accumulation may require a little elbow grease with a sponge. Rinse thoroughly with a strong stream of water
• Never apply any cleaning chemical to hot or warm wheel rims or covers
To clean the engine:
• Take care when using a power washer. The high-pressure fluid could penetrate sealed parts and cause damage
• Do not spray a hot engine with cold water. You could crack the engine block or other engine components
• Use specially formulated engine shampoo and degreaser
• The battery and filters need to be covered when cleaning. Refer to your owner’s manual
• Never wash or rinse the engine while it is hot or running; water in the running engine may cause internal damage
• Never wash or rinse any ignition coil, spark plug wire or spark plug well, or the area in and around these locations
Be sure to refer to your vehicle owner guide or contact Waldorf Ford for more cleaning and care information.

Editor’s Note: Welcome our guest blogger Kristen! She is currently a student at the University of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia, PA. She plays guard on the basketball team at Penn and also enjoys fishing, shopping, and spending time with her family. Kristen is a social media intern at Waldorf Ford this summer, and both her brother and cousin have also worked here.
So far, my experience at Waldorf Ford has been very exciting. I was able to jump right in and help out with an upcoming event, the 2013 High Five Tour. In this event, a red, white, and blue Mustang GT500 “Super Snake” is making stops throughout 48 states in an effort to support military families by building 2 “smart homes” for deserving veterans. Everyone is invited to show their support by signing the car with a message of support to veterans and their families or by making a donation. The tour will be stopping by Waldorf Ford on Monday, July 15th from 6-8pm, one of 60 stops on its 5 month tour.
I have been helping out in promoting the event via social media, mostly through Facebook and Twitter. I’m really starting to get the hang of it and was very glad to be re-tweeted by Operation First Response, an organization supporting military veterans! I’ve really enjoyed being a part of the High Five Tour and can’t wait to see the final product this Monday. Be sure to come out and see us at Waldorf Ford to show your support for our country’s heroes and their families!!
MyKey® technology – now in 6 million Ford and Lincoln vehicles on the road nationwide – is there when parents can’t be in the car with their teens this summer
Ford’s MyKey technology encourages teenagers to wear their seat belts, keep the radio volume down, watch their speed and pay attention to the road – not their cell phones
2014 Ford Fiesta is the latest Ford vehicle to get MyKey technology, available in dealerships this summer
Waldorf, Maryland, 2013 – There is perhaps no bigger worry for parents than their teens’ safety, including when they get behind the wheel this summer vacation season.
Parents’ concern is more than just instinct – the numbers back it up. Ford’s analysis of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data shows teen driver fatalities increase every month beginning in May before declining in September. So who is there to remind teenagers to buckle up when their parents aren’t around? How will they know when the radio is a distraction, or to slow down?
The answer: Ford MyKey® technology – standard equipment now on 6 million Ford Motor Company vehicles nationwide, including the new 2014 Fiesta, available in dealerships this summer.
“By using our MyKey technology, parents can increase the chances their children will adopt safe driving practices,” said Greg Basiliko General Manager of Waldorf Ford. “While state laws and educational programs are critical, ultimately, parents are the most critical component to keep their teen drivers safe.”
MyKey equals love, not control
MyKey was inspired by the determination of Andy Sarkisian, Ford safety planning and strategy manager, to keep his two daughters, along with teens everywhere, safe behind the wheel.
“We were brainstorming at work, thinking, ‘Is there anything we can do to our vehicles – anything we could add – to keep our kids safer?’” recalls Sarkisian, who has been with Ford for 35 years. “At the time, I was living out the scenario at home.”
Sarkisian and his team came up with MyKey after evaluating how teens can still have their freedom while learning to be responsible behind the wheel.
“It’s not about control – it’s not anything that dramatic,” Sarkisian says. “MyKey is about love. It’s about helping your children manage the transition from childhood to adulthood, and keeping them safer while they do it.”
The easily programmable system features several options:
Persistent Ford Belt-Minder® with audio mute sounds chimes and mutes the radio to remind teens to buckle up. A message on the instrument panel is also displayed: “Buckle Up to Unmute Radio”
Volume control can limit the audio system to 44 percent of maximum output if the radio is too loud
A speed alert chime at 45, 55 and 65 mph will remind teens to slow down. Parents can also limit top speed to 80 mph
“Do Not Disturb” helps parents block incoming phone calls and hold text messages on a phone paired with Ford SYNC® when teens are behind the wheel
In addition to the typical warnings displayed when the fuel level reaches 25 and 50 miles to empty, MyKey provides an extra warning at 75 miles to remind your teen to fill up
Distracted driving is a huge concern for parents of inexperienced drivers, and Ford’s “Do Not Disturb” feature helps minimize the risk. When paired with Ford SYNC, “Do Not Disturb” blocks incoming phone calls or text messages. Calls are diverted to voicemail and text messages are saved on the device for later viewing. Drivers can still make voice-activated outgoing calls, and SYNC 911 Assist® can still make a call in case of emergency.
“‘Do Not Disturb’ is yet another way Ford is helping parents encourage their kids to drive safer,” says Sarkisian. “We are continually listening to our customers and responding to parents’ desire to make sure their kids are paying attention to the road, not their cell phones.”

2013 Ford Fusion was also named Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the highest recommendation the organization has for vehicle safety
In addition to top safety marks, Fusion Energi also achieves EPA-rated fuel economy of 100 MPGe combined, including 108 MPGe city/92 MPGe highway
Waldorf, MD, 2013 – The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi has earned the highest possible “five-star” Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The five-star rating is the U.S. Government’s highest-possible safety rating and is determined only after severe testing procedures as part of NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), which combines vehicle performance in frontal and side-impact crash tests and resistance to rollover.
The Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid joins the Ford Fusion and the Ford Fusion Hybrid which already received five-star safety ratings. NHTSA has elected to test plug-in vehicles separately from vehicles powered by gasoline internal combustion engines as the market share of electrified vehicles is increasing. April marked Ford’s best hybrid sales month ever with Ford’s EV market share hitting an all-time high of 18 percent, up from 3 percent last April.
“The Fusion Energi combines the highest possible safety ratings from NHTSA and great fuel economy, two things we know customers are looking for in their vehicles,” said Greg Basiliko of Waldorf Ford. “Our strategy is to provide our customers with a range of powertrain options in our vehicles, while still leading in fuel economy in every segment that we compete.”
The Fusion Energi gets an EPA fuel economy rating of 108 MPGe, which is five MPGe better than the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid.
The NHTSA five-star rating for the Fusion Energi comes in addition to the 2013 Fusion being named a Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in December. The Top Safety Pick + designation is the highest rating the organization has for vehicle safety.
The Fusion Energi also features the Personal Safety System™ with safety belt technologies and front impact airbags. The Personal Safety System™ is a network of components that work together to tailor the deployment of the front airbags during frontal collisions. Other driver assist technologies available on the Fusion Energi include:
Ford Fusion, C-MAX Hybrids Attracting New Companies Searching for Savings at the Fuel Pump
Ford’s new hybrids can save business customers as much as 45 percent in operational costs
Ford expects to double hybrid vehicle production as companies procure Fusion and C-MAX for their company fleets, and as model year market share, according to R.L. Polk, has grown 13 percent since 2012
Ford C-MAX Hybrid and Fusion Hybrid have been purchased by a variety of companies including Con-way, Esurance, Quest Diagnostics and AT&T for fleet use since their introductions last fall
Fleet operations teams can put an average of 24,000 miles annually on a vehicle throughout its service; durability, resale value, technology and cost savings are all major factors in purchase decisions for companies as they evaluate fleet options
DEARBORN, Mich., April 29, 2013 – Ford’s fuel-saving Fusion and C-MAX hybrids are attracting new commercial buyers searching for ways to save money at the pump.
Con-way, Esurance, Quest Diagnostics and AT&T are among the newest companies to purchase Ford hybrid vehicles for their national fleets. Many of their regional employees drive more than 24,000 miles annually.
“New commercial fleet customers are turning to Ford as they look for fuel-efficient, durable vehicles that can withstand the daily use and duty cycles of their businesses,” said Jon Coleman, Ford commercial fleet sustainability and technology manager. “Ford’s Fusion Hybrid and C-MAX Hybrid give them the tools they need to get the job done, including leading EPA-estimated fuel economy, technology, great quality and durability.”
Many companies are seeing the value in replacing gas fleets with new offerings from Ford’s hybrid lineup, and the savings can be significant – cutting total operational costs by as much as 45 percent. At the same time, hybrid vehicles typically retain higher resale values than their gas counterparts. Resale value is an important factor when companies calculate total operating costs for their business fleets.
Ford has seen rising demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, especially hybrids among fleet customers. These buyers are increasingly choosing Ford’s Fusion Hybrid and C-MAX Hybrid – both introduced last fall – as they look to further their sustainability efforts and reduce operating costs in their national fleets.
Con-way, a transportation and logistics services company with nearly 500 locations in North America, is adding just more than 1,000 Fusion Hybrids to its national fleet this year. The cars are deployed with operations and sales personnel at the company’s Con-way Freight, Con-way Truckload and Menlo Worldwide Logistics operating units. Collectively, Con-way expects to save more than 1 million gallons of gas annually while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 45 percent using Fusion Hybrid as its primary fleet car.
After an extensive selection process, San Francisco-based Esurance chose 50 Fusion Hybrids for its national claims fleet to provide the latest technology, while also saving fuel and reducing carbon emissions. Esurance expects to save more than 69,000 gallons of gas over the next few years, which translates to a savings of more than $255,000, at a national average of $3.71 a gallon.
Commercial fleet customers continue to move toward more environmentally responsible vehicles to support their sustainability efforts, while providing the latest technology and safety features for their drivers. Ford technology such as SmartGauge® with EcoGuide provides valuable hybrid driving information, including the amount of energy captured through regenerative braking, most efficient trip suggestions for frequently traveled routes, and instant feedback on a driver’s green score via leaves earned for each segment driven.
“Besides the obvious benefits of improved fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions, the advanced technologies in Fusion Hybrid are just as important,” said Mitch Plaat, Con-way vice president of procurement. “Ford’s technology suite – which includes lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, backup cameras, navigation system and the SYNC® hands-free system – helps Con-way reduce accidents and improve highway safety for employees, their families and other motorists.
“The hybrids’ reduced carbon emissions also complement our sustainability mission and contribute to our efforts to be a good steward of the environment,” Plaat added.
Randy Mullett, Con-way vice president of government relations and public affairs, selected the 2013 Fusion Hybrid for his company car. Mullett is impressed by its fuel economy and advanced safety features. “My Fusion’s advanced technology features, lower emissions, reduced fuel consumption and superb styling all combine for a great car that is inexpensive to operate and embodies the professional image we want to present for our customers,” he says. “It serves as a tangible sign of Con-way’s commitment to sustainability.”
Quest Diagnostics recently added 150 C-MAX Hybrids to support its national logistics requirements. “As the leading diagnostic information services company, we maintain a significant national logistics operation for transporting millions of patient specimens each year for testing at our clinical laboratories,” said Clete Lewis, director, environmental, health and safety, Quest Diagnostics. “Given our scale, the type of vehicles in our fleet can really make a difference to the environment and our business costs.
“The environmentally conscious C-MAX Hybrid is much more fuel efficient and produces less pollution than standard automobiles,” Lewis added. “It is a smart addition to our fleet because it will promote lower fuel costs while also helping us to empower better health in the communities we serve.”
Ford now offers five electrified vehicles:
C-MAX Hybrid:EPA-estimated rating of 47 mpg city, highway and combined – up to 7 mpg better than Toyota Prius v – plus 50 more horsepower and 12 class-exclusive technologies
C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid: Best EPA-estimated combined miles per gallon equivalency of any plug-in hybrid, Ford’s first production plug-in hybrid vehicle has an EPA-estimated city rating of 108 MPGe and 21 miles of all-electric range – more than triple Prius plug-in’s six miles – and an EPA-estimated gas plus electric range of 620 miles. C-MAX Energi’s “real car” performance includes 195 horsepower (versus Prius plug-in at 134 horsepower), engaging driving dynamics and a quiet interior – all with a leading electric-only speed of 85 mph, more than 20 mph above the Prius
Fusion Hybrid: EPA-estimated rating of 47 mpg city, highway and combined, up to 6 mpg better than the Toyota Camry Hybrid
Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid: EPA-estimated gas plus electric range of 620 miles, electric-only range of up to 21 miles, and EPA-estimated rating of 108 MPGe city, 92 MPGe highway and 100 MPGe combined
Focus Electric:One of America’s most fuel-efficient compact cars, with an EPA-estimated rating of 110 MPGe city, 99 MPGe highway and 105 MPGe combined
